Rainfall deficit narrows slightly despite heavy rain
Many roads in Panaji were waterlogged after heavy rains lashed the city and several other parts of Goa on Thursday

Panaji: Heavy rain in parts of Goa over the past 24 hours has slightly improved the state’s monsoon rainfall deficit, although the cumulative seasonal rainfall remains nearly 30% below normal, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD).Sanguem recorded the highest 24-hour rainfall in the state at 100.3mm, followed by Ponda with 70.8mm. Both saw heavy rainfall (64.5 mm to 115.5 mm).Several other locations reported moderate rainfall below 50mm, which falls under the light rainfall category.Despite the showers, Goa’s cumulative monsoon rainfall remains below normal. From June 1 to July 2, the state has received 698.8mm so far, against a normal 990mm, resulting in an overall seasonal deficit of 29.4%.In seasonal totals, only the Canacona rain gauge station has crossed the 1,000mm mark so far, recording 1,160.8mm since June 1 to date.The IMD has forecast moderate to heavy rainfall across North and South Goa over the next few days. It has also warned of heavy rainfall with gusty winds of 40–50kmph at isolated places till Saturday. On Sunday, heavy to very heavy rainfall with gusty winds of 50–60kmph is likely at a few places across the state.The weather office has advised residents to stay alert for localised waterlogging and has cautioned fishermen against venturing into the sea during the spell of rough weather.
