Rain seeps into fuel storage tank at Saligao

TNNCalangute: Heavy rain on the intervening night of Monday and Tuesday led to water seeping into an underground petrol storage tank at a fuel station in Saligao, resulting in widespread vehicle breakdowns on Tuesday morning.A large number of vehicles, mostly two-wheelers, developed engine trouble shortly after refuelling at the pump. Several of them would not start at all, while others stalled soon after being driven. Later, mechanics in the vicinity confirmed that water had mixed with the fuel.Following the complaints, the petrol pump management inspected its storage system and found that one of the underground tanks had developed a leak, allowing water ingress. “There are two underground fuel storage tanks and the water is likely to have entered the tank from below. Only a couple of the dispensers on one side were affected and they mostly serve two-wheelers,” said Wilbur Pereira, manager of the petrol pump.As the issue affected multiple customers who had filled fuel at the station, the management offered to replace the contaminated fuel and bear the cost of repairs.
