Rain disruptions: Ahmedabad schools allowed to hold Sunday classes

Ahmedabad: In the wake of heavy rain and repeated school closures in Ahmedabad, the district education officer has issued a directive to all govt, grant-in-aid, and private schools across all boards, allowing them to conduct classes on Sundays to compensate for academic loss.The instruction has been sent to school managements and principals in both Ahmedabad East and West zones. It states that due to rain-related holidays declared in recent weeks, students’ academic schedules have been disrupted, and schools may voluntarily organise additional classes to complete the syllabus and support learning.Schools can remain open on Sundays this month if deemed necessary. The decision, however, is optional. Schools have been asked to inform students and parents in advance about Sunday classes, ensure teacher availability, and plan activities such as revision sessions, doubt-solving, assessments, and other academic engagements.Student safety must remain the top priority, the circular states. Schools have been instructed to take decisions based on local weather conditions and infrastructure readiness.Ahmedabad witnessed severe waterlogging during the rains last month, leading to multiple school holidays. Similar compensatory academic measures have been suggested in the past as well to minimise learning gaps.
