QR-based ID system to ensure security at counting centres

Chennai: The Election Commission of India (ECI) has introduced a QR code-based photo identity card module to eliminate the possibility of unauthorised persons entering counting centres. There are 62 counting centres across Tamil Nadu.An ECI statement said that three-tier security mechanism has been prescribed for the verification of identity at counting centres. At the first and second tiers, photo identity cards issued by the returning officer shall be checked manually. At the third and innermost security cordon closest to the counting hall, entry shall be permitted only after successful verification through QR code scanning, the statement said.The system would be extended to all future general and bye-elections to the Lok Sabha and state legislative assemblies, said deputy director of ECI P Pawan said in the statement. Th is part of a series of more than 30 initiatives taken by the Commission over the past year. This includes the introduction of standardised QR code-based photo ID cards for BLOs, he said.
