Bathinda: Punjab’s peak electricity demand is projected to rise to 22,486 MW by 2031-32, while the state’s annual energy requirement is expected to cross 1.08 lakh million units (MUs), according to the Resource Adequacy Plans (RAPs) prepared by the state in consultation with the Central Electricity Authority (CEA).Union power minister Manohar Lal shared the projections in a written reply in the Lok Sabha on Thursday to a question by Punjab MP Amar Singh.The projections estimate Punjab’s energy requirement at 86,228 MUs and peak demand at 17,873 MW in 2026-27, rising steadily to 1,08,352 MUs and 22,486 MW by 2031-32. The RAPs are prepared to ensure adequate generation and power procurement to meet future demand.The minister also said Punjab recorded a provisional peak demand of 17,004 MW in Jun 2026, the highest ever assessed by the CEA. The state had an operational power generation capacity of 13,808 MW as on Jun 30, comprising 3,829 MW in the state sector, 6,989 MW in the private sector and 2,991 MW allocated from central generating stations. PSPCL has also signed power purchase agreements for 2,960 MW of renewable energy.Punjab’s projected energy requirement is expected to rise from 86,228 MUs in 2026-27 to 90,838 MUs in 2027-28, 95,726 MUs in 2028-29, 1,00,909 MUs in 2029-30, 1,04,561 MUs in 2030-31 and 1,08,352 MUs in 2031-32. Over the same period, peak power demand is projected to increase from 17,873 MW to 18,767 MW, 19,705 MW, 20,690 MW, 21,570 MW and 22,486 MW, respectively.
