Pune: Pune city police on Monday evening withdrew security cover from 20 people, including anti-noise campaigner Vidyanand Bapat, following a security audit.Pune police commissioner Amitesh Kumar said, “It is a routine exercise. We conduct security audits of persons who have been provided with security cover, and the cover is withdrawn if there is no threat perception. We have withdrawn security of 20 such persons.”A senior police officer said these persons were affiliated with political parties and included businesspersons, activists and others. Each of them had been provided with one, two or three police constables for security. “Some of these personnel were provided free of cost, while others were part of a paid security arrangement. We conducted a security audit of these persons over the past month and checked whether threats to them persisted. After verifying these aspects, we withdrew their security personnel.”
