Provide status of Garo Hills drug cases in 3 wks: HC to govt

Shillong: The Meghalaya high court has directed the state govt to submit an affidavit within three weeks on the status of drug cases lodged at four Garo Hills police stations and on police patrolling in areas known for drug peddling.A division bench comprising Chief Justice Revati Mohite Dere and Justice W Diengdoh issued the order on May 7, after hearing a PIL filed by Mewaker Lyngdoh.On May 6, the BSF, Narcotics Control Bureau, and customs submitted affidavits detailing enforcement measures and seizures following an HC directive on April 17.The BSF said it had seized narcotic substances on eight occasions between Jan 19, 2025 and Feb 28, 2026.“The BSF authorities have registered cases with Dalu Police Station, Gasuapara Police Station, Mahendraganj Police Station and Purakhasia Police Station,” the HC said.In its affidavit, the NCB stated that it had registered one case directly linked to Meghalaya since Jan 1, 2025, with recovery of 1.957 kg of methamphetamine tablets.“Investigation of the said case revealed trafficking of contraband from Silchar in Assam towards Mawsynram in the state of Meghalaya with further cross-border linkages,” the HC said.The NCB mentioned about six seizures, involving methamphetamine and heroin, worth crores of rupees in Assam’s Barak Valley, “geographically contiguous to Meghalaya and operationally relevant for trafficking routes thereby affecting the state”.The NCB said a North Eastern Regional Office under its deputy director general has been set up in Guwahati to strengthen coordination.“Field offices have been established at Aizawl and Dimapur in 2025, particularly in view of cross-border trafficking through Myanmar-bordering areas,” the affidavit said.The PIL will be taken up next on June 8.
