Jaipur: A tourist guide who was stabbed near Amer Fort Monday died while under treatment at SMS Hospital Tuesday morning, triggering protests on the road and a shutdown of shops in the area as angry locals demanded compensation and a govt job for the deceased’s family.Manish Soni (40), a resident of Amer, was admitted to the ICU after being stabbed in the stomach following an argument with a tourist vehicle driver, identified as Azam, near the fort around 9.30am Monday.

Azam has since been arrested and is being interrogated in custody, said SHO Rajendra Godara.Police said Soni was stopping vehicles from proceeding towards Amer Fort, leading to an argument with Azam. “The argument escalated, and Azam attacked Soni with a knife,” a police officer said.The knife struck Soni in the abdomen, leaving him grievously injured, he added.DCP (North) Karan Sharma said a scuffle had broken out between Soni and Azam a few days ago as well. While Soni had visited the police station after the incident, he did not put in a formal complaint, Sharma added.News of his death triggered anger among residents in the Amer area, many of whom voluntarily shut down their shops and gathered on the road in protest. Police had to bring in additional forces from nearby areas before the protesters could be persuaded to disperse.Police said protesters relented only after several rounds of talks, during which the deceased’s family was assured of all possible financial assistance and a contractual job.Local residents had resorted to a demonstration and road blockade on Monday as well, after news of the stabbing spread.
