Protesting family demands CBI probe into Abohar youth’s murder

Abohar: Friends and family members of Ajay Kumar, who was shot dead in Abohar on Sept 27, continued their dharna for a CBI probe outside the civil hospital mortuary on Wednesday. However, a Abohar ‘bandh proposed for Wednesday at the behest of various trade bodies was deferred. Ajay was shot outside a Valmiki temple in Sant Nagar on September 27. Critically injured, he was undergoing treatment in Ludhiana, where he passed away on Monday evening. Ajay was married and is survived by two children. On Wednesday, Ajay’s family and community representatives expressed a lack of confidence in the Punjab police’s investigation and reiterated their demand for a CBI inquiry. They warned that if justice was not delivered, they would call for a statewide shutdown across Punjab, and Ajay’s last rites would not be performed till then.Reacting to the incident, Abohar MLA Sandeep Jakhar said it was distressing to see people forced to take to streets to seek justice. Jakhar met the bereaved family and offered condolences, and said it was unfortunate that a family, having lost its son, was compelled to stage a protest to demand justice.Meanwhile, the father-in-law of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) halqa in-charge Suhani Doda, Shiv Lal Doda, allegedly named as one of the conspirators in his death declaration by Ajay, also issued a response regarding the incident. Expressing sorrow over Ajay’s death, he said the loss of a young son was a profound tragedy for any family. He urged the police administration to conduct a thorough investigation and take strict action against the actual culprits. Doda alleged that certain political figures were attempting to term the incident as personal vendetta, thereby inciting the grieving family against him.He said that he had no connection to the incident. Shiv Lal said he was associated with the Valmiki community, to which Ajay too belonged, for years and remained committed to standing by them.
