Panaji: The six-lane elevated Porvorim corridor will be opened for use for traffic from Sep 11 at 4pm, after its inauguration by Union minister for highways Nitin Gadkari on Sep 9 at 6pm. The 5.50km corridor, constructed at a cost of Rs 664.6 crore by Rajasthan-based contractor RRSM Infra, will be kept open to public before the inaugural to walk on, take selfies and even conduct runs and walkathons on Sep 7 and 8, said PWD minister Digambar Kamat.Public will only be able to experience the corridor by foot and not ride or drive on it on Sep 7 and 8, the minister said.“We wanted the corridor to be inaugurated prior to the Ganesh Chaturthi festival as many people take Ganesh idols from North Goa to Vasco and Margao. It will help make travel easy for them. After inauguration, we need time to clear the inauguration ceremony erections on the corridor, as a result it will be made open for traffic on Sep 11 at 4pm,” said Kamat.He said that the inaugural function will take place at the starting point of the corridor near Hotel Majestic. He said that around 3,000 to 4,000 people are expected to attend the inaugural. The entry for the event for the public will be open to enter from Guirim and arrangements for those bringing their vehicles for parking will be made on a section of the corridor, he said.During the inaugural, the Panaji side entrance to the corridor will be shut.Kamat said that all service roads will be repaired before the project is inaugurated. He said that any debris from the work will also be cleared before the corridor is thrown open to the public for use.
