New Delhi: Delhi Police has registered an FIR over the alleged sharing of a doctored video of Russia’s foreign minister purportedly portraying an anti-India stance. The video was allegedly shared by Supreme Court lawyer Prashant Bhushan.According to police, the matter came to light on Nov 3, during cyber patrolling. A social media handle reportedly flagged the alleged circulation of the video from Bhushan’s account.“Through the said video, there is an allegation of disseminating misleading, defamatory and inflammatory content to incite public disturbance and spread rumours,” Delhi Police wrote on X.Bhushan later told TOI: “I shared the video thinking it was genuine. It now appears that it was doctored. Before posting it, I had asked Grok (X’s AI chatbot) whether the video was real and it did not raise any red flag. Once I found out it was doctored, I deleted my post. Nothing offensive was said in the video.”The case was registered under sections 336 (4) (forgery), 353 (1) (statements conducing to public mischief), 356 (defamation), 340 (forged document or electronic record and using it as genuine) of BNS and 66C of the IT Act at a special cell police station. The video purportedly showed Russia’s minister saying that India was merely a trading partner and had no right to dictate or interfere in its foreign policy. The police action came after the ministry of external affairs (MEA) fact-checked the digitally manipulated video. “Fake Alert! The video of the Russian Foreign Minister being used in this post is fake!” MEA wrote on X.An X user also shared the altered video, prompting the Russian embassy in India to flag it as fake. “Please stop copying silly AI fakes,” the embassy posted on X.
