Panaji: Goa police on Saturday detained two suspects in connection with Friday night’s firing at Srinivas Nayak, director of Majestic Pride Group, in Porvorim. The shooters, caught on CCTV cameras, remained at large more than 24 hours after the incident.Police have ruled out an extortion angle for now but said all possible motives are being examined. Police found that a 9mm calibre weapon was used in the firing. They recovered two live rounds from the crime scene. The incident took place a few metres from Porvorim police station. CCTV footage showed two men, wearing caps to hide their faces, waiting outside the hotel before firing at Nayak, whose group operates offshore and onshore casinos in Goa.Police said three rounds were fired. When hotel security personnel tried to nab the assailants, they fled from the spot. Nayak was not injured. Porvorim police have registered a case of attempt to murder.DGP Alok Kumar said police had obtained leads and multiple teams had been formed to arrest the accused. “We have detained two suspects in the case,” Kumar said. The DGP said he did not want to share more details as it could hamper the investigation. “There is no extortion angle to the case as of now and all possible angles are being investigated to nab the accused,” he said.In his complaint, Nayak said the attack was sudden, deliberate and directed specifically at him. He said the acts amounted to an attempt to murder and not merely intimidation or threat.“Fortunately, the shots fired by the assailants missed me and I escaped without sustaining any firearm injury. However, the fact that the shots did not hit me was purely fortuitous and does not diminish the gravity of the offence or the evident intention of the assailants to cause my death,” Nayak said..
