Pune: The city traffic police have caught 707 four-wheelers with tinted windows and 1,505 sporting fancy or illegal licence plates in a special drive over the past three days.“We have peeled off the dark film from the windows, and removed the unauthorised registration plates from offending vehicles on the spot,” said deputy commissioner of police for traffic Sandip Bhajibhakare, adding that the drive was carried out after many such vehicles were spotted floting the norms. “We will continue to act against such vehicles.”According to the DCP, the offending four-wheelers had tinted film on the windows as well as the rear windshield, while those with unauthorised licence plates had extremely small or illegal fonts — offences he described as egregious.“Some vehicles sported illustrations of bullock carts, deities and other spiritual or religious symbols on the number plates,” he said. Each violator was fined Rs 500 for a first offence, while repeat offenders had to shell out Rs 1,500, Bhajibhakare said. The drive began on June 29 and the DCP said they will not let up any time soon. “We will continue to remove films from car windows and windshields, and uninstall illegal number plates on the spot,” Bhajibhakare said.Advising vehicle owners to have high security registration plates (HSRPs) affixed, the deputy commissioner of police said, “If we find repeat offenders, we will take very strong action against them,” he said.
