Police arrest one in Navi Mumbai flyover murder

Navi Mumbai: After a week-long probe in the murder case of a labourer whose body was found under the flyover near NMMC headquarters on April 17, CBD-Belapur police have arrested one accused, while his aide is being traced. The victim’s body was discovered on April 17 morning. A police officer said that the murder victim was initially unidentified as from the crime scene neither his identity proof nor his mobile was found. During the probe, it was learnt that the victim was a daily wage labourer who had come from other region. When inquired with some daily wage labourers in the locality, the victim was identified as Akash Rathod (31). It was learnt that he was always accompanied by his two friends with whom he used to daily consume liquor under the flyover near NMMC headquarters. Accordingly, the names of his two friends were established and a manhunt was launched for them. One of his friends was identified as Subhash Dhurve (26), who was with Rathod along with another friend on April 16 night while they were enjoying liquor session under the flyover. Accordingly, Dhurve’s location was traced using technical expertise and by obtaining CCTV camera footage along the stretch of road leading to the flyover and he was arrested on Saturday. Dhurve has confessed that on April 16 night, the three of them were having liquor session under the flyover when a quarrel broke out over sharing of food as Rathod was insisting on taking huge share in the food, claiming that he had given money for buying the food. Hence, Dhurve and his friend assaulted Rathod on his head with a huge stone lying nearby, which proved fatal. Rathod’s body was discovered on April 17 morning, after being spotted by the NMMC sweepers who daily gathered under the flyover before resuming work.
