Poisoned ‘prasad’: Neighbour held in Surat revenge plot

Surat: Utran police have solved the poisoning case at the posh Shaligram Status society, arresting a woman who allegedly laced laddus with poison and placed them at her neighbour’s doorstep, leaving two persons critically ill.The accused, identified as Usha Nakrani, lived on the same floor as the family of the victims. Police said she acted out of suspicion that the family had helped her daughter elope a year ago.Deputy commissioner of police (Zone 5) Lakhdhirsinh Zala said the case was cracked after a weeklong probe. “We examined all angles and called Nakrani for questioning. Her behaviour raised suspicion. CCTV footage, along with statements of neighbours and the victims, pointed to her. When confronted with the evidence, she confessed,” he said. The incident took place on April 10 when Gordhan Donda, 70, found a packet with two laddus placed between the grille and main door of his flat. Believing it to be ‘prasad’, he and his daughter-in-law had one, while others in the family did not.Shortly after, Donda collapsed in the society compound while his 45-year-old daughter-in-law Kiran Donda’s health also deteriorated. Both were rushed to a private hospital and admitted to the ICU. The family alerted police and handed over the remaining laddu for investigation. The Donda family are in the textile business.Police said Nakrani harboured a grudge against the Donda family due to her suspicion and decided to take revenge. An FIR was registered against her under Section 123 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita for causing hurt by poison.Officials are awaiting the forensic science laboratory report to determine the exact substance used. More charges may be added based on the findings.
