Guwahati: Assam biologist Purnima Devi Barman’s fight to save the ‘Hargila’ gained the spotlight in Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Mann Ki Baat on Sunday.In his 135th Mann Ki Baat, Modi highlighted Barman’s conservation work on the greater adjutant stork, once pushed to the brink of extinction as myths and habitat loss fuelled persecution.The PM said, “A bird is found in Assam known as the ‘Hargila’. The ‘Hargila’ is a rare bird. It plays a vital role in keeping nature clean. However, for a long time, it was considered inauspicious in certain parts of Assam. People disliked seeing it in their vicinity. Often, trees housing ‘Hargila’ nests were cut down. Just imagine — a bird that helps clean the environment became a victim of people’s fears.”“It was during that time that biologist Purnima Devi Barman witnessed it all. She resolved to change the misconceptions deeply rooted in people’s minds. She spoke to women and explained the facts based on science; gradually, women began joining this campaign,” he added.Modi said the shift turned the bird into a village symbol, with rural women forming the ‘Hargila Army’ and overcoming social resistance.“Today, I am so honoured and deeply humbled that our PM mentioned our work in such a great way. It is a recognition of all community-led conservation. As the PM mentioned so scientifically, it highlights how we can convert superstition into science through commitment and compassion,” Barman said.She urged responsibility for biodiversity and “misunderstood species,” adding that perception change is central. “Over 20,000 women have pledged to the Hargila Army to save this bird,” she said.CM Himanta Biswa Sarma said the bird was long seen as bad luck until Barman’s community mission gained ground. Forest and environment minister Jayanta Mallabaruah praised the effort, citing her Wayfinder Award and national recognition.
