Chennai: Specialists at Dr Agarwals Eye Hospital showcased pinhole pupilloplasty, a minimally invasive surgical procedure, as an alternative to corneal transplantation for select patients with irregular corneas and vision impairment. With more than one lakh people in India estimated to require corneal transplants, experts said the innovative technique could offer a viable solution for many, particularly those unsuitable for donor grafts or facing long waiting periods.The procedure, which improves vision by creating a pinhole effect, emerged as one of the key highlights at RETICON 2026, the hospital’s flagship retinal conference. The conference featured around 50 speakers from India and abroad. Key sessions focused on emerging trends in retina care, advancements in the treatment of retinal vascular diseases and innovations in surgical retina.“There has been an increase in cases of bleeding, blindness and other eye-related complications among adults with diabetes, hypertension and kidney or liver disorders. Pinhole pupilloplasty can be an alternative for many as it also helps prevent scarring after surgery,” said Dr Manoj Khatri, director, Vitreo-Retinal Services, Dr Agarwals Eye Hospital.“Through RETICON 2026, we aim to demonstrate the latest advancements in surgical techniques to delegates. India is one of the diabetic capitals of the world, and diabetic retinopathy often leads to bleeding in the eye. While many tend to opt for surgery, it is important to understand that laser treatment is often a safer, minimally invasive option,” said Dr Amar Agarwal, the hospital chairman.
