The Government Railway Police (GRP), Surat, is investigating the incident asa custodial death
Surat: The foreign national who died in Railway Protection Force (RPF) custody in Surat on Monday night has been identified as Nigerian citizen Chukwve Meka Daniel Ajah (32), who had been living in Mumbai’s Malad (West) for several years.Ajah was brought to the RPF post for questioning after he allegedly picked up a quarrel with co-passengers aboard the Golden Temple Express. The Government Railway Police (GRP), Surat, is investigating the incident as a custodial death.According to police, they received a call about unruly behaviour by passengers after the train entered Surat around 10pm. The quarrel had reportedly started after the train left Mumbai, with Ajah allegedly using a fire extinguisher during the altercation. As Surat was the train’s next halt, RPF and GRP personnel reached the train after it arrived.Ajah and two other passengers involved in the quarrel, reportedly over standing near the gate of the general coach, were taken to the RPF post for questioning. Ajah subsequently collapsed and died.During preliminary investigation, police found that Ajah had been booked in two cases under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act at Malavani and Khar police stations in Mumbai in 2018.Police are awaiting the final forensic report to determine the exact cause of Ajah’s death.
