Over 35,000 paramedical seats remain vacant in self-financed colleges in Gujarat

Ahmedabad: The admission process for paramedical courses, including nursing and physiotherapy, in Gujarat has reached its conclusion, leaving thousands of seats vacant across govt and self-financed colleges. While 242 seats remain vacant in govt institutions even after the fifth round, more than 35,000 seats in self-financed colleges have also remained unfilled. The fifth round of admissions covered 2,489 seats across 69 govt colleges offering nursing, physiotherapy and other paramedical courses. Of these, 2,247 seats were filled, leaving 242 vacant. The remaining seats include vacancies in auxiliary nursing midwifery (ANM), general nursing midwifery (GNM) and physiotherapy courses at various institutions across the state.Govt physiotherapy colleges have reported vacancies in Ahmedabad (3), Vadodara (13), Surat (2), Jamnagar (12) and Dahod (15). Nursing institutions in Mehsana, Godhra, Mandvi, Dang and Porbandar have also reported unfilled seats. No further admission process is expected for the vacant govt seats. An extension of the admission deadline for nursing courses is also considered unlikely, although discussions have reportedly begun on extending the deadline for physiotherapy admissions.Meanwhile, self-financed colleges were authorised to fill their vacant seats independently until Oct 31. According to figures released by the admission committee, only 14,446 of the total 50,086 seats in these colleges were filled, leaving 35,640 vacant. With the deadline now ending, no further action is expected to fill these seats, and college managements will also not be permitted to admit students independently.
