Guwahati: The Centre for Wildlife Rehabilitation and Conservation (CWRC) has rescued over 10,000 wild animals in 25 years, with nearly 68% rehabilitated and released into the wild.Established on Aug 28, 2002, at Panbari near Kaziranga, the Centre for Wildlife Rehabilitation and Conservation (CWRC) has become a key rescue and rehabilitation facility, treating injured, orphaned and displaced animals.Forest and environment minister Jayanta Mallabaruah said in a post on ‘X’: “Over the years, the centre has handled a wide range of species, including rhino calves, Asiatic black bear cubs, hoolock gibbons and wild buffalo. The animals are provided veterinary treatment and, wherever possible, rehabilitated to regain the skills and natural behaviour necessary for their survival before being released into suitable habitats.”He said CWRC also played a crucial role during Assam’s recurring floods, particularly in the Kaziranga landscape. Rescue teams work with the Assam forest department to provide emergency veterinary care to animals stranded, injured or displaced by floodwaters.“Special efforts are made to reunite rescued young animals with their mothers. When reunification is not possible, animal keepers, veterinarians and conservation experts provide long-term care and rehabilitation, which can often continue for several months,” he added.CWRC’s work has contributed to conservation initiatives, including rhino reintroduction in Manas National Park and animal rehabilitation in Manas, Dibru-Saikhowa and Dihing Patkai.The minister said the centre’s journey highlighted the role of sustained rescue, scientific rehabilitation and dedicated frontline teams in helping wildlife return to natural habitats.
