Kolkata: Non-BJP parties have demanded online voter roll search option.Congress has written to Bengal’s chief electoral officer (CEO), the state election commissioner (SEC) and Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) commissioner demanding that each MRO be assigned an email ID where people can file claims and objections against the draft voters’ list for KMC polls.CPM, too, will write to SEC on Saturday asking him to post three municipal returning officers (MROs) looking after boroughs in north Calcutta at the Jessop Building, instead of Alipore where they have their offices now.The draft electoral rolls are available with the MROs and people keen to see the rolls must visit these offices — at Jessop Building or Alipore Survey Building of DM South 24 Parganas’ office in Alipore — depending on their borough. The Opposition has cried foul over the fact that someone living in Cossipore or Metiabruz has to come to Alipore to see the rolls or file an objection.“Each MRO should be given an email ID so that all claims and objections can be filed digitally as there is no logic of filing claims and objections physically at all times where distance and time matter,” the letter by Congress mentioned. The letter added that the party functionaries did not get to know the outcome of the objections they raised during hearings after the draft of revised ward boundaries was published in Sept.Kallol Majumdar, CPM’s Kolkata district secretary, said they have drafted a letter seeking more logical posting of MROs for the convenience of voters and political parties. “3 MROs who are in charge of boroughs in north Kolkata have their offices in Alipore,” he said.
