Jaipur: In a major crackdown on illegally operating e-rickshaws, Jaipur Traffic Police seized 270 vehicles and initiated action against 858 e-rickshaws and e-carts during a special enforcement drive conducted across the city between June 13 -17. The drive comes amid growing concerns over the rising number of unregistered and unfit e-rickshaws on Jaipur roads, which traffic police say are contributing to congestion, traffic violations and road safety risks. The campaign was carried out under the supervision of DCP (Traffic) Yogesh Goyal.According to traffic police estimates, around 40,000 to 50,000 e-rickshaws and e-carts are currently operating in Jaipur. However, only 7,000 to 8,000 of them have the mandatory documents required for legal operation, highlighting the scale of the challenge facing enforcement agencies.During the drive, traffic personnel checked driving licences, registration certificates, insurance documents, identity records and other mandatory papers of e-rickshaw and e-cart operators. Drivers were also counselled about traffic regulations, road safety norms and the proper operation of their vehicles.Police said action was taken against operators found running unregistered vehicles, vehicles without valid fitness certificates and those lacking other mandatory documents. Such vehicles were either challaned or seized in accordance with the provisions of the Motor Vehicles Act.A senior traffic police officer said the objective of the campaign was not only enforcement but also to ensure that e-rickshaw operators comply with legal requirements and contribute to safer and smoother traffic movement in the city. The proliferation of e-rickshaws in the city has become a growing concern for traffic authorities. In several parts of the city, e-rickshaws are often seen operating without proper registration, stopping at undesignated locations to pick up passengers and occupying road space, leading to bottlenecks on busy stretches.Officials said the enforcement drive would continue in the coming days and similar checks would be conducted in different parts of the city. Traffic police have urged e-rickshaw owners and drivers to obtain all mandatory documents, including a valid driving licence, registration certificate, insurance and fitness-related clearances, at the earliest.Authorities said that strict action will continue against vehicles found operating illegally or in violation of traffic regulations.
