Dibrugarh: A senior NSCN-K (Angmai) cadre surrendered before Longding police in Arunachal Pradesh on Saturday.Self-styled captain Pongngoi Wangnowham, 37, a native of Kamkah village under Kanubari police station in Longding district, surrendered at the office of the Longding superintendent of police in the presence of officials from 24 Assam Rifles, Longding police, the intelligence unit and other security agencies.Officials said Wangnowham was associated with the banned outfit since 2005 and operated mainly in the Tirap-Changlang-Longding (TCL) belt, a sensitive region near the Myanmar border and a focus of counter-insurgency operations.Longding SP Dekio Gumja confirmed the surrender and said, “The surrender of Wangnowham is a significant step towards restoring peace in the region. We appeal to other cadres still active in the jungles to give up arms and return to mainstream society.”A senior Assam Rifles official said, “Such surrenders reflect the growing trust between security forces and residents. Our continuous engagement with villagers across the TCL districts has played a crucial role in encouraging insurgents to abandon violence.”After legal and procedural formalities, Wangnowham was reunited with his family.Officials said security agencies are continuing efforts to weaken insurgent networks and encourage militants to return to the mainstream under existing surrender-cum-rehabilitation policies.
