Kolkata: Chief minister Suvendu Adhikari has instructed top cops, including commissioner of Kolkata Police Ajay Nand, to ensure that former CM of Bengal and Trinamool Congress supremo Mamata Banerjee continues to receive the same level of security as before. Mamata at present enjoys Z- security involving as many as 55 personnel. In the meeting held with senior officers at Nabanna on Monday, Adhikari has issued strict instructions to ensure that there are no changes in Banerjee’s security. He has also told cops that Banerjee should not face any disrespect or any form of nuisance, reminding them that she is one of the senior most politicians of the state and a three-time chief minister of Bengal. The state, though, on Monday downgraded the security cover of Diamond Harbour MP and former CM’s nephew, Abhishek Banerjee. He will no longer receive Z+ category protection following a security review conducted by the directorate of security. Officials said he would now be provided only the standard security cover available to Members of Parliament. Sources said Adhikari had enquired in the meeting why should an MP get additional security cover at the expense of the state. In presence of senior officers who have served in CM security before, Adhikari reminded how he, as the Leader of the Opposition, was allotted just two security guards and that they were changed every week. The directive marks a significant shift in the state’s political climate, signaling a blend of administrative scrutiny and protocol-driven respect for the former CM.
