Silchar: National Institute of Technology (NIT), Silchar has risen 25 places to 166th globally in the UI GreenMetric World University Rankings 2026, while retaining fifth place among participating Indian universities.The institute scored 8,400 in the rankings, which covered 2,016 universities across 110 countries, compared with 8,187.5 and 191st place in 2025. It ranked 185th with a score of 8,100 in 2024.The rankings assess sustainability across seven parameters – setting and infrastructure, energy and climate change, waste, water, transportation, education and research, and governance and digitalisation.NIT Silchar scored highest in energy and climate change, with 1,725 points, followed by transportation (1,537.5), waste (1,275), education and research (1,250), water (1,000), setting and infrastructure (850), and governance and digitalisation (762.5).The governance and digitalisation category was introduced this year and includes indicators such as policies on AI and IoT, gender representation in leadership, anti-corruption systems, complaint mechanisms, digital literacy and codes of ethics.The institute said the new category should be considered when comparing scores for 2025 and 2026. It plans to focus on energy efficiency, waste and water management, sustainable mobility, and sustainability-oriented education and research, while developing its campus as a “living laboratory” for sustainable technologies and practices.
