Amritsar: The officiating jathedar of Akal Takht, Giani Kuldip Singh Gargaj, has rejected a proposal seeking permission to make a film on the life of Sikh warrior Hari Singh Nalwa, citing a recent directive prohibiting such portrayals.The Akal Takht decision is based on a ruling issued by the five Sikh high priests on Dec 28, 2025. The ruling bars the production of films, animated content, and artificial intelligence-based videos on “puratan” (ancient) Sikh warriors. The officiating jathedar said Nalwa fell within this category, making the proposal ineligible for approval. The ruling aims to preserve the sanctity and historical authenticity of Sikh figures, amid concerns over misrepresentation and commercialisation of revered personalities, he added.The decision was taken after a request was submitted by Bhanushali Studios. Co-producer Bhavesh Bhanushali had written to the Akal Takht, seeking permission to produce a film based on the life and legacy of Nalwa. He had also sought a meeting with the officiating jathedar and members of the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC).However, the proposal was declined in line with the existing directive. Akal Takht secretariat in-charge Bagicha Singh said a written communication, along with copies of the directive, had been forwarded to the producer, both in original and English translation, advising caution in undertaking any future projects related to Sikh historical subjects.
