Chennai: A 30-year-old cab driver had a narrow escape after his car plunged into a construction pit near Nandanam metro station on Saturday night.Police said Ibrahim of Tiruvottiyur was driving near a construction site for a road overbridge above the metro tunnel stretch connecting Nandanam with Saidapet, when another car approached him at high speed.In an attempt to avoid a collision, he swerved to the right, causing his vehicle to veer into a pit that was excavated and barricaded for the metro work.The car crashed into the safety barricades and was left hanging precariously over the pit.Local residents called the police and rescue personnel, who rushed to the spot and safely rescued Ibrahim. The car was pulled up using a crane after almost an hour of effort. Traffic on the stretch was affected for a while.Ashok Nagar Traffic Investigation Wing police registered a case and are investigating. Police have collected the CCTV footage from the nearby building to ascertain the cause of the accident.
