Nameri Tiger Reserve earns global recognition for conservation measures
With Nameri’s approval, all four tiger reserves in Assam — Kaziranga, Manas, Orang and Nameri — now have CA|TS-Approved status

Guwahati: Nameri Tiger Reserve has received CA|TS-approved status for meeting global standards in tiger conservation and protected-area management.“The status was accorded to Nameri on September 10, following the required assessment and approval by the CA|TS International Executive Committee,” Nameri field director Piraisoodan B said. The Conservation Assured|Tiger Standards (CA|TS) framework evaluates tiger reserves on wildlife protection, habitat management, monitoring, administration and community participation. With Nameri’s approval, all four tiger reserves in Assam — Kaziranga, Manas, Orang and Nameri — now have CA|TS-Approved status.Located in Sonitpur district, Nameri National Park and Tiger Reserve covers 464 sq km, including a 200-sq-km core area.A senior forest officer attributed the recognition to strengthened anti-poaching measures, scientific tiger monitoring, habitat restoration and landscape management.Nameri has 39 anti-poaching camps in its core area, supported by day-and-night foot and elephant patrols. The Assam Forest Protection Force is deployed as a strike force against wildlife crime, while patrols are intensified in vulnerable areas. The reserve uses camera traps and monitoring under the National Tiger Conservation Authority framework to track wildlife movement, threats and habitat use.In the wider Nameri landscape, authorities have recovered 120 hectares of encroached land, restored 75 hectares of grassland and created waterholes in Sonai Rupai Wildlife Sanctuary. The reserve also manages grasslands, removes invasive vegetation and works to prevent re-encroachment and illegal grazing.Nameri is connected to Arunachal Pradesh’s Pakke Tiger Reserve through forested areas, enabling the movement of tigers and other wildlife.“These measures contributed to Nameri receiving CA|TS-Approved status,” the officer added.
