Murder case undertrial dies in Agartala hospital, kin seek probe

Agartala: An undertrial prisoner, the main accused in a murder case two years ago, died at Agartala Govt Medical College and Hospital on Friday.Pradyot Dhar Chowdhury, in custody for nearly two years, was facing the trial for the murder of Durga Prasanna Deb. He was admitted to the hospital reportedly after developing cardiac complications. His family alleged that medical treatment was delayed and called for a judicial inquiry into the circumstances surrounding his death. Chowdhury’s brother said the family was informed about his hospitalisation but learnt of his death only after reaching the hospital. The deceased’s nephew claimed that medical staff told them that police officers had been asked to sign a document before treatment could begin. According to the nephew’s statements, the police did not sign the paperwork, leading to a delay of nearly two hours in providing medical care. The family questioned why Chowdhury was suddenly taken to hospital. “We have no idea about what caused the death, so our family is asking for a thorough judicial inquiry,” he said.Chowdhury was a former secretary of Bharat Ratna Sangha, a prominent club near Agartala airport. Deb, the victim in the murder case, later became secretary of the same organisation.
