Murder case undertrial died in assault inside Kilpauk Institute of Mental Health hospital

A 27-year-old undertrial prisoner undergoing treatment at the Institute of Mental Health (IMH) died on Thursday after being assaulted by another undertrial patient inside the hospital’s criminal ward on July 20.Zaheer was admitted to the institute after the Aaliyar police arrested him in connection with a murder case in Nov 2024. On Monday, at 10.40am, he was attacked by a 19-year-old inmate inside the bathroom of the criminal ward-1 in the hospital, the police said.Police said the inmate, Aravindha Samy of Tenkasi, has been undergoing treatment since March 2026. He, too, is facing a murder case. He kicked Zaheer and beat him repeatedly. Upon hearing Zaheer’s cries, the hospital staff and other inmates intervened and shifted him to Govt Stanley Medical College Hospital for treatment.However, died on Thursday. Based on the complaint of duty doctor Sumithra, the Secretariat Colony Police Station registered a murder case and arrested Aravindha Samy.A
