MUMBAI: Mumbai will become slum-free in the next 10 years through slum cluster redevelopment, Maharashtra chief minister Devendra Fadnavis said on Thursday.Fadnavis was speaking at the change of guard ceremony of real estate industry advocacy group NAREDCO in Mumbai.He said the government has set a target of having 10,000 rehabilitation flats ready by 2029 under the Dharavi Redevelopment Project.“The developer had asked me to do the bhoomipujan. I refused and said I wanted to invite PM Narendra Modi in January 2029 to hand over the keys to the 10,000 rehab flats,” Fadnavis said.Along with slum cluster redevelopment, the government is also working on redeveloping MHADA layouts to ensure optimal utilisation of land, Fadnavis said.He said the government has prepared a plan for mixed-use development of bus depot land, with residential and commercial projects as well as recreational facilities such as museums and recreation grounds.“We shall have smart new-age bus depots and bus stands,” he said.Fadnavis said the government’s focus also extends to the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR), Pune Metropolitan Region and Nagpur Metropolitan Region.He said a new city is being developed in Nagpur and outlined a vision for port-led development connecting Vadhvan with dry ports in Jalna and Vidarbha.The construction of a new airport in Pune would also boost the growth of global capability centres (GCCs) and smart manufacturing, he said.
