Mother-son duo jailed for heroin trafficking in Arunachal

Itanagar: A special NDPS court in Arunachal Pradesh has sentenced a woman to 30 years of rigorous imprisonment and her son to 20 years of rigorous imprisonment for possessing a commercial quantity of heroin and operating an interstate drug trafficking network from a hotel.Special judge (NDPS), Yupia, Hirendra Kashyap sentenced Sahida Khatun alias Anju to 30 years’ rigorous imprisonment and imposed a fine of Rs 3 lakh.Her son, Faruk Ali, was sentenced to 20 years’ rigorous imprisonment and fined Rs 2 lakh.The court convicted the duo under Section 21(C) of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act after the prosecution established that they possessed 257.52 grams of heroin packed in 21 packets.The case dates back to May 21, 2021, when police, accompanied by an executive magistrate, raided a hotel in Banderdewa following a tip-off.Both convicts have been informed of their right to appeal against the verdict before the Gauhati high court.
