Hyderabad: A six-year-old girl, who was initially reported missing, was allegedly murdered by her mother Rekha and her partner Saikumar in Old Alwal, with police saying the child was seen as an obstacle to their relationship. The child’s body was found in an overhead water tank on the terrace of her residence on May 16.Police said Rekha had married a distant relative, Raju, in 2020, but the couple later separated due to marital disputes. She subsequently developed a relationship with 20-year-old neighbour Saikumar. Police said the duo wanted to marry, but his family opposed the relationship as Rekha was already married and had a child. Investigators said the two were in frequent contact and allegedly met a week before the incident, where they discussed plans to eliminate the child. “Initially, they allegedly planned to push the child into Alwal Lake, but later dropped the idea and chose the overhead tank,” police said On May16, when Rekha’s younger brother was away, she allegedly took the child to the terrace on the pretext of playing and drowned her in the tank. She later claimed the girl was missing, police said. The attempt to pass it off as a missing case failed after suspicion arose during probe. Police said Rekha later confessed and alleged she acted under pressure from Saikumar. Both have been arrested.
