Most declare holiday, some schools to host tribute events on Syama Prasad birth anniv

Kolkata: While most schools in the state have declared a holiday on Monday to mark the 125th birth anniversary of Syama Prasad Mookerjee, a few city schools will remain open at least for few hours to pay tribute to him.Devi Kar, the director of Modern High School, said, “We felt that children should learn about him, and we have planned programmes on that day, which we think are more necessary than just declaring a holiday.”DPS Newtown has declared a holiday on Monday, but a scheduled quiz competition will take place. Principal Ambica Mehra said, “While the school will be closed on Monday, we will host the ASISC Zonal Quiz Competition. Participants and the required teaching staff will be present to conduct the event, and we will begin the programme by paying tribute to Syama Prasad Mookerjee in recognition of his enduring contribution to the nation.State-run schools had observed a Syama Prasad Mookerjee Fortnight leading up to Monday.Mitra Institution, Bhowanipore, has planned a grand celebration as Mookerjee was an alumnus and had served as the president of the school’s managing committee for many years. The school will host cultural events, and only participants will come to school that day. Swagata Basak, headmistress of Taki House Government Sponsored Multipurpose School, and Partha Pratim Baidya, headmaster of Jadavpur Vidyapith, said they would go to their respective schools on that day, and a few students who live nearby would come in the morning to pay tribute to Mookerjee.
