Surat: The Surat Municipal Corporation (SMC) has found mosquito breeding at 1,089 construction sites during the week-long drive to curb vector-borne diseases.As part of the targeted inspection exercise, civic health teams surveyed 1,579 ongoing construction projects. Officials said breeding conditions were identified at a large number of sites, prompting enforcement action and fines amounting to Rs 4.55 lakh.The drive focused on preventing the spread of diseases such as dengue and malaria by eliminating stagnant water and improving sanitation at high-risk locations.Authorities also issued notices to 173 construction sites, directing them to take immediate corrective measures, including removal of stagnant water and improved on-site maintenance. One of the highest penalties of Rs 20,000 was imposed on a school in East Zone B after mosquito breeding was detected on its premises.Beyond construction sites, the civic body deployed health teams across the city, surveying nearly 5 lakh households. Officials inspected around 14.85 lakh potential breeding spots and identified 4,427 active mosquito breeding locations.Preventive actions, including source reduction and removal of stagnant water, were carried out on site. Additionally, 1,070 premises owners were issued notices for lapses contributing to breeding risks.The teams also removed 2,551 abandoned waste items that could collect rainwater and serve as breeding grounds for mosquitoes.
