Kolkata: Jadavpur University authorities have assured the hostel boarders of ramping up their security and will write to the state govt for extra security personnel and CCTVs. The authorities have also told the students that the two boarders, affiliated to ABVP, against whom complaints were raised of threatening other boarders will be called for questioning and a report will be filed. One of them is also a Main Hostel boarder and has lodged an FIR against 11 JU students on Thursday night. Another ABVP member is a boarder of New Boys’ Hostel. Two representatives each from 14 hostels participated at the hostel welfare board meeting to discuss primarily the security concerns at the hostels following the attack on Main Hostel by outsiders at 2.10 am on Thursday. Hostel boarders, mainly from the Main Hostel, alleged that among the 11 FIRs there are some Main Hostel boarders and had been “targeted because of their religion” by the ABVP student.A senior official said, “The VC has assured them that he will ensure their safety. He will write to the state govt on the existing security arrangements and to further increase it. The hostel coordination committee will speak to them and file a report.”An engineering student said, “Anyone can practice their own politics, we have no problem. But in the hostel we should stay together. We will not tolerate anyone who is a threat to fellow boarders and targets them based on religion, caste or political agenda. Among the FIRs lodged against the students, there are some Main Hostel boarders and surprisingly most are from a particular religion. We feel that he has just targeted those students as some were not part of the clash.”Another Main Hostel boarder said, “The authorities have to take accountability because during the unrest despite repeated calls the super did not come physically. We had to manage our safety. Even with Jadavpur PS right beside the hostel and police at the gate present, we received no support. The violence led to serious consequences, including broken laptops in the C block and physical injuries such as cuts from thrown stones.”There are around 400 boarders at the JU Main Hostel. Among them around 12-15 are active ABVP members.ABVP JU unit president Nikhil Das said, “All these allegations are baseless. They are the ones who are being targeted because of being less in number. I heard that dean of students had called them. Since an FIR has already been filed and various narratives are being spread, they will go with a lawyer.”
