Mohali: The residents of Mohali are grappling with prolonged power outages lasting 4-8 hours from the last four days, even as the meteorological department has issued a yellow alert warning of intense heat wave across Punjab.According to the schedule released by the Punjab State Power Corporation Limited (PSPCL), power supply disruptions are planned as follows: April 22 (10am to 6pm), April 23 (9:30am to 5:30pm), April 24 (9:30am to 5:30pm), and April 25 (10am to 2pm) in many parts of Mohali district. The powercom, in a public notice issued, has stated that long-duration electricity cuts would continue until April 26 in major cities of the state, including Mohali, Ludhiana, Jalandhar, Amritsar, Bathinda and Patiala. The power utility has attributed the outages to ongoing work aimed at strengthening and modernising the electricity distribution system. The officials said the staggered schedule had been designed to facilitate infrastructure upgrades, adding that while efforts would be made to minimise disruption, residents were likely to face extended day-time outages. The power cuts have triggered concern among residents, particularly in view of rising temperatures and heat wave conditions. Many have expressed frustration over the timing and duration of the outages. “We are already dealing with extreme heat and these long power cuts are making it unbearable, especially for children and the elderly,” said Jagdev Singh, a resident of Mohali’s Phase-VII. Amrik Singh from Phase 3B2 said, “There should have been better planning. At least during peak summer, essential services like electricity must be ensured without such long interruptions.” Several residents also highlighted the impact of these power cuts on daily routines. “Work from home has become difficult and even basic activities like cooking and accessing water are affected,” said a Mullanpur resident. With temperatures expected to remain high in the coming days, the residents have urged the authorities concerned to reconsider the schedule or provide alternative arrangements to minimise inconvenience during the heat wave.
