Mob violence in Powai after man run over by truck

Dibrugarh: A man was run over by a truck in Powai under Digboi police jurisdiction in Assam’s Tinsukia district late Monday night, sparking mob violence on Tuesday afternoon in which over 500 residents took to the streets, torched an autorickshaw, and vandalised a car and the accused’s residence.Police identified the victim as Akash Tiwari (Munna), 35, a Powai resident. The accused, Akash Singh, 38, son of a local businessman, allegedly struck Tiwari with a truck after a dispute. Police said Singh returned to the spot driving a truck bearing registration number AS-01-SC-1951 and deliberately rammed it into Tiwari around 9.45 pm.Witnesses alleged Singh hit Tiwari, reversed, and ran over him again, killing him on the spot.Singh surrendered at Margherita Police Station the same night and was later handed over to Digboi Police, who took him into custody. Police seized the truck and registered a case.Tensions escalated on Tuesday afternoon as a large crowd gathered in Powai demanding justice. Protesters set an autorickshaw on fire, vandalised a private car, and attacked Singh’s residence, causing extensive damage.Police and fire service personnel were deployed to the area. Firefighters doused the flames while police dispersed the crowd. Senior officers, backed by additional forces, continued patrolling to prevent further violence.“The situation is under control now. We appeal to residents to maintain peace and allow the law to take its course. The accused is in custody and a thorough investigation is underway,” Tinsukia SSP Mayank Kumar said.
