Gurgaon: A 12-lane corridor for through and local traffic is set to end the gridlock at Millennium City Centre metro station junction soon.GMDA is planning a six-lane underpass at the intersection of sectors 27-29 and 43-44. The 1.3-km-long underpass will also have a three-lane surace road on each side to cater to local traffic. The project — estimated at Rs 55 crore — is expected to be completed within 18 months after work begins. “We have invited the bids for the construction of six-lane underpass along with six-lane at-grade surface road,” a senior GMDA official said.The project will improve connectivity between NH8 and Southern Peripheral Road (SPR), besides decongesting one of the city’s busiest intersections. The junction caters to commuters travelling towards NH8, Golf Course Road, SPR, Netaji Subhash Marg and adjoining sectors 27, 28, 29, 43 and 44.It handles heavy commuter traffic generated by Millennium City Centre metro station, along with buses, auto-rickshaws and e-rickshaws that converge at the junction.“The project has been planned keeping future transportation requirements in mind. Future infrastructure — such as Gurgaon Metro and the proposed RRTS corridor — has been taken into account. Necessary consultations have already been held to ensure there are no conflicts with the upcoming metro infrastructure,” the GMDA official said.A new metro station of the proposed Millennium City Centre and Cyber City corridor is being planned here. Moreover, NCRTC has also proposed a metro-cum-RRTS corridor connecting IGI Airport and Noida Airport through this road.Officials said the underpass is expected to provide signal-free movement for through traffic while local vehicles will continue to use the surface road.GMDA CEO PC Meena said, “The project will significantly enhance the carrying capacity of the corridor, reduce travel time and provide a safer and more efficient commuting experience for road users travelling between the city centre and the SPR corridor.”The design also addresses one of the major concerns associated with underpasses in Gurgaon — waterlogging.“Rainwater harvesting and groundwater recharge structures have been incorporated into the project so that stormwater is naturally recharged and waterlogging does not occur. Solar panels have also been proposed to generate renewable energy for operating the underpass infrastructure,” the official said.Officials said the project will be executed with proper barricading and a traffic management plan to minimise inconvenience to commuters during construction. The design also includes improvements to slip roads, traffic islands and junction geometry to streamline traffic movement.“We have coordinated with GMRL regarding the proposed metro reversal track, which will up on Vyapar Kendra Road, crossing this intersection. The proposed RRTS corridor is also expected to pass through the junction, making it one of the city’s key future transport interchanges,” the official said.Separately, GMDA is also moving ahead with the revamp of the entire 7.5-km-long road connecting IFFCO Chowk and SPR. The 60-metre-wide road passes through sectors 27, 28, 29, 43, 47, 52, 52A, 56 and 57.The plan includes two-lane service roads, footpath-cum-drainage networks and upgraded junctions.This road runs parallel to Golf Course Road and serves as a key link to Cyber Hub, Udyog Vihar, NH8 and Faridabad. The corridor is lined with dense residential and commercial development, including gated colonies, urban villages, hospitals, malls and office hubs, contributing to heavy peak-hour movement.The stretch accommodates two metro stations and six junctions, four of which — Millennium City Centre, Ardee Mall, Tau Devi Lal Park and Hong Kong Bazaar — are major congestion points.The project is now awaiting approval from High Powered Works Purchase Committee before work is awarded.“We will be strengthening the existing carriageway, service road, while footpaths, cycle tracks, central verge improvement will be taken up. Moreover, we will be focusing on the upgradation of the drainage network along this road. The project is in the final stage of allotment and the matter will be taken up in the next meeting of the committee,” the official added.
