Chandigarh: Chandigarh MP Manish Tewari on Sunday dedicated six newly constructed lanes in Deep Complex, Hallomajra, to residents. The project was executed using funds released under the Members of Parliament Local Area Development Scheme (MPLADS).Addressing a gathering, Tewari said such works should ideally be undertaken by the Municipal Corporation, while MPLADS funds should primarily be used to improve education and public health infrastructure. However, he said the civic body’s failure to provide basic amenities had compelled him to utilise MPLADS funds for essential infrastructure projects.Tewari also stressed that development must be kept above party politics, saying progress in any part of a city or country benefits all citizens, irrespective of ideological differences.Later, he interacted with students at the Chandigarh Territorial Congress Committee office. Recalling his tenure as National President of the National Students’ Union of India (NSUI) from 1988 to 1993, he urged students to follow the principle of “Study and Struggle” and work towards building a more equitable society.NSUI Raises Paper Leak, Unemployment IssuesAs part of the All India Congress Committee’s nationwide “Chattron Ki Gunj” campaign, the NSUI organised a student interaction programme, Chattra Samvidhan Samvad, at the Chandigarh Pradesh Congress Committee office on Sunday. Former Union minister Kumari Selja said recurring paper leaks, recruitment irregularities and rising unemployment were eroding students’ confidence and jeopardising their future. She said the aspirations of lakhs of students preparing for competitive examinations were being shattered by examination and recruitment scams.Youth Congress Backs Gig WorkersThe Chandigarh Youth Congress on Sunday organised a convention to honour gig workers, including delivery partners, cab drivers and other platform-based workers, and raise issues concerning their rights. Speakers said gig workers play a vital role in the economy but continue to be deprived of social security, health and accident insurance, pensions and other labour protections. They alleged that millions of workers remain uncertain about their future due to inadequate policy support.
