Mayor reviews sanitation, parking overhaul plans

Chandigarh: Mayor Saurabh Joshi Friday chaired a meeting with municipal commissioner Amit Kumar and senior officials to review key civic issues and the functioning of MC departments.Discussions focused on strengthening sanitation, with emphasis on scientific waste management, door-to-door garbage collection and implementation of the Municipal Solid Waste (MSW) Rules-2026. The mayor directed strict monitoring of sanitation services and timely redressal of public complaints, along with improved cleanliness across sectors, villages and colonies.The welfare of sanitation and other MC employees was also taken up, including job security, working conditions, availability of safety equipment and resolution of pending issues.The meeting reviewed the proposed overhaul of the paid parking system, with focus on smart solutions such as e-ticketing, CCTV-linked central monitoring, boom barriers, real-time parking management and integration with mobile applications at key sites.Issues related to street vendors were discussed, with the mayor calling for proper vending zones, better facilities and systematic regulation while safeguarding livelihoods.Engineering wings presented updates on ongoing and proposed works across B&R, public health, horticulture and electricity departments.Officials also reviewed the draft tender for paid parking operations, with the city divided into four zones covering major commercial areas. Revised parking rates at key sites, including Sector 17, Sector 35-C and Sector 22-B, are aimed at promoting use of the Sector 17 multilevel parking.The mayor and commissioner directed officers to incorporate public-friendly measures in the final policy framework and ensure transparent, efficient and technology-driven civic administration.
