Man who killed girlfriend’s mother over marriage offer nabbed

Noida: A man who allegedly killed a woman’s mother and injured three family members in Harola after they rejected his marriage proposal was arrested following a police encounter late Monday night, officials said.The accused, Harnam Singh, had allegedly carried out the attack late Saturday night, where the victim’s family was sleeping outside their room due to the summer heat. According to police, Singh had been pressuring his neighbour Jyoti to marry him, but her family had rejected the proposal.In the attack, Jyoti’s mother, Sanju Devi, was killed, while Jyoti, her father Surendra Sharma and her sister Julie sustained serious injuries. Officials said Jyoti remains in critical condition and is undergoing treatment in the ICU.Police said the family was asleep in the corridor when Singh allegedly entered the building through the rooftop and attacked them with a sharp-edged weapon.Julie, an eyewitness to the incident, told police that the accused was carrying sharp weapons in both hands. According to her statement, Singh first attempted to attack her father, but Sanju Devi intervened and was repeatedly stabbed. Despite pleas from the daughters to spare their father, the accused allegedly continued the assault before fleeing through the staircase. Harnam, who carried a reward of Rs 25,000 on his arrest, was apprehended after an encounter with Phase-1 police near a drain in Sector-14 around 9.30 pm on Monday, police said.According to ADCP Manisha Singh, a police team attempted to stop the accused, who was riding a stolen scooter allegedly taken from the Knowledge Park police station area. “During the chase, Harnam opened fire at the police team, prompting retaliatory firing in which he was injured,” Singh said.The accused sustained a bullet injury to his leg and was admitted to the district hospital.
