Man strangled 13-year-old daughter because tea ran out

Rajkot: A man allegedly tied up his 13-year-old daughter and strangled her with a dupatta — leaving her unconscious on the floor of their house in Bhadla village of Jasdan taluka — because tea made in the house that morning had run out.The alleged offence occurred on July 21 and police filed an FIR on Tuesday, after the girl recovered following weeks of hospitalization.According to police, on July 21, the girl was at home with her nine-year-old sister while their mother had gone to a hospital on Jasdan-Atkot Road for a pregnancy-related medical examination. The younger daughter borrowed a neighbour’s phone to call her mother after finding her elder sister unconscious on the floor with the dupatta around her neck.The mother called relatives and an ambulance soon rushed the girl to a govt hospital in Rajkot, where she regained consciousness after three days. A station diary entry was registered at Bhadla police station at the time.In her statement to police, the girl said that after he came home her father had began arguing with her, because the tea made at home had run out. The confrontation escalated and he tied her hands and legs with a dupatta. He then used the dupatta to strangle her until she passed out.The girl’s mother, 32, in the FIR stated that her husband frequently returned home drunk and assaulted her. She said their 13-year-old daughter would often intervene in such situations. Bhadla police have registered a case of attempted murder and intentional insult with intent to provoke a breach of peace.
