Gorakhpur: A 37-year-old man allegedly stabbed his estranged wife and mother-in-law at his in-laws’ house in Gorakhpur after a village mediation postponed his wife’s return to the matrimonial house until Sunday. The wife sustained critical injuries, while her mother was also wounded while trying to save her.Both women were rushed to the Nehru Hospital of BRD Medical College. Doctors said the wife’s condition remains critical. Police have detained the accused and registered a case of attempt to murder and other relevant offences.According to police, Vinod, a resident of Moharipur under Chiluatal police station limits, married Lalita, 34, a resident of Langri village under Gulriha police station, about 13 years ago. The couple has two sons and a daughter. Lalita had been staying at her parental home for some time following a family dispute.On Wednesday evening, Vinod arrived at his in-laws’ house along with relatives to take his wife back. A village-level mediation was held between the two families, during which it was decided that Lalita would return to her husband’s home on Sunday. However, police said Vinod was upset over the decision.According to the police, around 8 pm, Vinod allegedly bought a kitchen knife from a roadside vendor and returned to his in-laws’ house. At the time, Lalita and her mother, Potni Devi, were on the terrace due to a power outage.Following a brief argument, Vinod allegedly stabbed Lalita in the abdomen, leaving her critically injured. When Potni Devi intervened to save her daughter, she too was allegedly attacked and injured.The accused fled the spot after the attack. On receiving information, Gulriha police reached the scene and shifted both women to BRD Medical College for treatment.Based on a complaint lodged by Shabnam, Lalita’s sister-in-law, Gulriha police registered a case against Vinod under charges of attempt to murder and other relevant sections of law.SP (City) Nimish Patil said the accused was later detained and is being interrogated.
