Jaipur: A 23-year-old woman preparing for competitive exams was allegedly shot in the chest at her rented room in Sitapura Wednesday by a man who had been pressuring her to marry him and had allegedly threatened to kill her if she refused, police said.The incident occurred around 6.30pm near Electronic Market area in Sitapura. The accused, identified as Akash, allegedly entered the woman’s room when the door was open, shot her and fled. DCP (South) Rajarshi Raj Varma said that the bullet hit her near the shoulder.The victim lives with her mother in a rented room. Her mother, who works in the private sector, told police that her daughter had been preparing for competitive examinations from home for the past three months.According to the mother’s complaint, Akash is a member of their extended family and had allegedly been pressuring Kanak to marry him for around a year. He had also allegedly threatened to kill her if she refused.The family had previously raised the matter with Akash’s relatives after he allegedly visited their rented accommodation around 15 days ago and misbehaved with the girl.Police said the girl’s mother had returned from work around 6.30pm and found her daughter inside the room. Shortly afterwards, Akash allegedly entered the room and opened fire, hitting Kanak in the chest before fleeing.Police reached the spot after receiving information about the shooting and began searching for the accused. Investigators are examining the circumstances leading to the attack and collecting evidence from the scene.The case was registered on the basis of the mother’s complaint, and police teams have been formed to trace Akash. Further investigation is underway.
