Man, mom attacked after Behala loud music protest

Kolkata: A protest against late-night loud music turned violent in the Sanjib Pally area near Behala Chowrasta in the early hours of Sunday. A group of four men assaulted a local resident and attacked his 48-year-old mother after the latter objected to the loud music being played at 1.30 am. The accused repeatedly hit the woman, a caregiver, using a bangle one of them was wearing and dragged her some distance.Parnasree Police has detained three persons in this regard.The incident took place around 1.45 am outside the victims’ residence. According to cops, trouble began when the complainant, who works in a transport firm, objected to the loud music and disruptive ruckus in the neighbourhood by a group of local youths. Enraged by the protest, the accused — identified in the police complaint as Raja Majhi, Sonu, Jitu, and several unnamed associates — allegedly brutally beat up the man. “Our neighbour Raja had organised the party. His three friends, including Sunu, who was dragging me around, are outsiders. My son objected to loud music at 1.30 am. In reply, Raja said since it was his house, he could do as he wanted. When my son requested him to not create trouble for neighbours, they began assaulting my son. Raja hit me and shoved me, and Sunu and his brother joined in,” the woman said.The accused allegedly struck the woman on the forehead with a heavy object, grabbed her by the hair, and manhandled her, outraging her modesty. The assailants also threatened both mother and son with dire consequences.The violence came to an end after neighbours, alerted by the commotion, intervened. The attackers fled the spot. Both victims were taken to Vidyasagar State General Hospital, where the woman had to get multiple stitches for a bleeding head wound. Cops have registered a case under provisions of Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023, including sections 109 (attempt to murder), 74 (assault or criminal force to woman with intent to outrage her modesty), 351(2)(3) (criminal intimidation), and 3(5) (joint liability). A probe is underway.
