Man held from Mumbai for Rs 78.2L film investment fraud

Varanasi: A joint team of Sarnath and Cholapur police arrested a man accused of cheating a firm of Rs 78.2 lakh on the pretext of investing the money in film production. The accused, who had been absconding for nearly four years, was arrested from Mumbai.The accused, Jaswant (47) of Basti district, was currently living at Patelwadi in Andheri. He was arrested on Monday and produced before the Railway Mobile Court in Andheri, where police obtained a transit remand for bringing him to Varanasi.Sarnath police station in-charge Pankaj Kumar Tripathi said Jaswant was wanted in a fraud case registered in 2022. Acting on specific information and surveillance inputs, a police team traced and arrested him from Veera Desai Road in Andheri, Greater Mumbai district.According to police, the case was registered on April 26, 2022, following a complaint by Surendra Kumar Yadav, a resident of Rustampur under Chaubepur police station limits. The complainant alleged that the accused had taken ₹78.20 lakh from the firm of his brother, Virendra Yadav, by promising to invest the money in film production.Based on the complaint, a case was registered at Sarnath police station under IPC Sections 420 (cheating) and 409 (criminal breach of trust).Police said the accused had been frequently changing his locations to evade arrest since the case was registered. After detailed questioning and completion of legal formalities, he was produced before a court on Wednesday and sent to jail.
