Hisar: Nearly six years after 19-year-old Pawan was killed in Chautala village, a Sirsa court has sentenced the father of the victim’s girlfriend’s, Jeet Ram, to life imprisonment. District and sessions Judge Puneesh Jindhia also imposed a fine of Rs 25,000 on him. In case of non-payment, he will have to undergo an additional year of imprisonment.The case dates back to March 10, 2020. According to the prosecution case, Pawan had been in a relationship with a young woman from the same village for around three to four years, and the two wanted to marry. Her family, however, was opposed to the relationship, leading to disputes between the two families. According to case proceedings, Pawan and his family had assured the panchayat that he would not maintain contact with the woman. However, the two continued communicating. The prosecution said Jeet Ram became hostile towards Pawan after learning about their continued contact.On Holi, March 10, Pawan allegedly passed the woman’s house on his motorcycle two or three times. Jeet Ram reportedly objected to this. Around 4 pm, after learning that Pawan had returned to the area, Jeet Ram allegedly took a knife from his house and went looking for him. According to the complaint, Pawan was returning home from the market with his brother Indraj when Jeet Ram and some others reached the spot. Jeet Ram allegedly pushed Pawan from behind, causing him to fall, and attacked him with a knife. Pawan sustained multiple injuries and fell unconscious. His family took him to the govt hospital in Chautala, from where he was referred to Dabwali. Doctors at Dabwali declared him dead.Police registered the case on the complaint of Pawan’s brother, Sandeep Kumar. Jeet Ram was arrested on March 12, 2020. Three people were initially named in the case, but during investigation, two were found not involved and were cleared, while prosecution proceedings continued against Jeet Ram.After hearing arguments from both sides, the court convicted Jeet Ram. The sentence was pronounced on Friday, with the court awarding him life imprisonment and a Rs 25,000 fine.
