Agartala: South Tripura district court on Friday awarded a life sentence to a man following his conviction for the murder of 43-year-old Manoranjan Tripura in Baikhora area last year. South Tripura district and sessions judge Gobinda Das ordered him to pay a fine of Rs 25,000.The incident occurred on the night of Feb 23, 2025, in Sathbhuiya Bari of Jolaibari when Manoranjan, seated in front of Molin Das Tripura’s shop with several others, was smoking a hookah. Accused Chandra Kumar Tripura, 30, allegedly attacked them with a machete.Prosecutors asserted that Chandra Kumar, without any provocation, initiated an assault on Manoranjan, striking his face, head and other body parts, causing fatal injuries.The public prosecutor said upon hearing the disturbance, the victim’s wife and daughter rushed to the spot and saw Chandra Kumar attacking Manoranjan with a dao. Alarmed by their screams, the attacker fled. A murder case was subsequently filed at Baikhora police station.During trial, the court heard 17 witnesses, including the investigating officer, medical experts and forensic specialists.After considering oral testimonies, forensic evidence and other documentary materials, the court held Chandra Kumar guilty of murder and awarded him a life sentence.
