Gurgaon: A case of an “accidental drowning” turned into a murder investigation after a 21-year-old man’s family in Rewari recovered deleted call records from his mobile phone. Monu had called his wife Tannu 49 times and they allegedly spoke for three minutes on the day of the incident, police said.Almost a month after Monu, a resident of Jarthal village in Rewari, was found dead in a canal, police have uncovered an alleged conspiracy involving Tannu, her lover and his associates. Tannu, a resident of Kasoli village, was arrested Thursday evening, along with Hariom, a resident of Mundanwas. Two other accused, including Tannu’s lover Sonu and his associate Aman, are absconding.Bawal DSP Surendra Sheoran said, “Technical evidence revealed that Tannu had an old love affair with Sonu. They conspired to eliminate Monu. On the night of June 8, Tannu called Monu to Kasoli village, where Sonu’s associates were waiting. Hariom and Aman overpowered Monu after he reached the village and covered his mouth and nose until they believed he died or became completely unconscious. They then threw him into the canal to make the murder appear as an accident. We are awaiting the FSL report, which will determine whether he died due to suffocation or drowned after being thrown into the water.”The duo were produced before a court and remanded to two days’ police custody. Investigators are questioning them to establish the roles of the remaining accused and trace Sonu and Aman.Monu went missing on the night of June 8 after leaving home on his electric scooter. Two days later, his body was found in Asalwas canal, with his scooter lying on its bank. As there were no visible external injury marks on the body, investigators initially suspected accidental drowning. The case took a dramatic turn after Monu’s family raised doubts over the circumstances surrounding his death and examined his mobile phone. According to the family, Monu was supposed to bring his wife back from her parental home on June 7. They alleged that Tannu had asked him to bring his salary before visiting her.On June 8, after receiving his salary, Monu withdrew cash from a common service centre (CSC). He later told his family that he was suffering from stomach pain and was going out to buy medicine. He declined his father’s offer to accompany him and left home on his scooter. When he failed to return that night, the family started searching for him. On June 9, they contacted Tannu to ask if Monu had reached her or spoken to her. According to the family, she denied having spoken to or met him. Her relatives also denied that Monu had visited Kasoli village. The family recovered deleted call records from Monu’s mobile phone, which showed that he called Tannu several times on June 8. Police said the two spoke only once that day. The family’s suspicions prompted them to press for a deeper investigation.Sheoran said police initially registered a missing person case after Monu’s father, Ratan Lal, approached Kasola police station on June 9. “On June 10, after the body was recovered, the family members expressed doubts. We then took the help of intelligence inputs and technical evidence,” Sheoran said. The investigation revealed that Tannu was allegedly unhappy with her marriage and was in a relationship with Sonu before the wedding. “The deceased’s family has also expressed suspicion about the involvement of the woman’s family members. That aspect is also being investigated,” Sheoran said.Police said Monu had been doing odd jobs and had recently started a shop in Jaliyawas. Investigators believe Tannu remained in regular contact with Sonu after her marriage and the conspiracy was hatched to remove Monu from their path.
